Get an IELTS Tutor in Canada: Achieve Your Target Score with BrightSparkz

What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a standardised test for non-native English speakers to test their English language proficiency. It is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP and Cambridge English. In Canada it is primarily administered by the British Council and if you want first-hand information their IELTS introductory page should be one of your first stops. We’ll also be looking into getting an IELTS tutor to help you prepare.

Whether you want to immigrate to Canada or just study here, you may be required to prove your proficiency in English by writing the official IELTS test. For more information on the language tests accepted by Canadian Immigration, please confirm updated information on their site.

Understanding the IELTS Exam

There are two main IELTS tests available:

  • IELTS Academic: Typically required when applying to a University that uses English as its language of instruction.
  • IELTS General Training: Typically required for immigration or other non-academic visa purposes.

Deciding which test to undertake depends on what you need to achieve, however, the Academic exam is widely considered the more challenging of the two options available.

Both tests are broken up into four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. For both tests, the first 3 sections can be assessed on the same day. However, the final section (Speaking) needs to be scheduled for when an examiner is available.

While the difficulty of the test is definitely candidate-specific, the general consensus is that the Writing section is the most challenging. The Listening and Reading sections require that you simply identify correct answers, while the Writing section requires you to generate content on your own. This content needs to be coherently structured and you are expected to adequately apply grammar and use a range of vocabulary.

If this makes you panic, don’t stress! With a tutor to help guide you through the process and assist with preparations you’re more likely to achieve the scores you need.

Top Tips from Our IELTS Tutors

1. Set a goal

To set a realistic goal, you should make sure that you are familiar with the grading criteria and your personal score requirements. Be sure that you know what you need to achieve (based on visa requirements or university entrance requirements, etc.) and what you need to be able to do to achieve the necessary scores.

Be realistic about your goals! For instance, if you need to score over 6 on each section to apply for Permanent Residency, then there is no need to set your goal at scoring 9. Once you’ve set a goal, your tutor can help you to assess your current level and design a plan to help work on your weaknesses to improve your score.

2. Use online resources

There are numerous resources available online to help you prepare for your IELTS test. We would recommend starting with what the IELTS offers online and working from there. There are many paid courses available, but these may not be necessary if you put enough time into using free online resources. A quality tutor may also be able to help curate your resources, based on areas that need most work.

3. Take regular practice tests

We recommend that you work through as many practice tests and questions as what you can find. It is also important to work on doing them under time constraints. This will give you a good indication of whether you are ready to take the test yet or not. When attempting the written questions, a tutor will be able to give you extensive feedback on how to improve so that you don’t feel stuck.

4. Engage with the language as much as possible

In preparation for taking the IELTS test you will benefit greatly from growing your vocabulary. One of the best ways to do this is to immerse yourself in English as much as possible. Speak to native speakers wherever possible and consume content online. You can do this by watching high-quality YouTube videos in English, listening to podcasts or even streaming series in English. Keep a journal with new words that you learned and look up their meanings if the words are new to you. Try to form your own sentences with these new words as often as possible.

Why You Need an MCAT Tutor: Ace the Exam with BrightSparkz Tutors

What is MCAT?

The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is a standardised test that forms part of the medical school admission process in multiple countries. It is administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and if you want first-hand information their MCAT introductory page should be one of your first stops. We’ll also be looking into getting an MCAT tutor if the need arises.

Of the 17 accredited medical schools in Canada, 10 require all applicants to complete the MCAT (as at January 2025). For the most up-to-date admission requirements at the school of your choice we recommend that you visit their website to double check what is expected of you.

Why the MCAT is Challenging

The MCAT is a multiple-choice, computer-based test which takes roughly 7 and a half hours to complete. It is split into four sections:

  • Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems
  • Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems
  • Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior
  • Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (also called CARS)

The first three sections rely on foundational knowledge covering a range of concepts. The final section is meant to assess your ability to understand and analyse information given to you.

Because of the MCAT’s structure, which relies on processing a lot of content, along with practicing the question styles for the CARS section, it takes a fair amount of time to prepare for. A realistic timeline is to give yourself between 3 and 6 months to prepare. This does depend on your other concurrent commitments and which year of pre-med you are in. We’ve also included some tips to help guide you.
